Shocker! Disney has rehired James Gunn to direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3.
Gunn was fired by Disney in July after very offensive tweets the director made several years ago were re-tweeted. The tweets, Gunn claimed, were done purely for shock value and did not reflect his beliefs or actions but they included pedophilia, definitely not the sort of thing Disney wanted to be associated with. Several also included jokes about rape.
While the cast of Guardians stood by the director, no one was really surprised when Disney fired Gunn. Disney stated they did plan to use the Guardians 3 script written by Gunn, but he would not direct. Gunn moved on to be hired by WB to direct the upcoming sequel to The Suicide Squad.
Now, they have surprisingly reversed their decision and re-hired Gunn – which has been confirmed by both Marvel and Gunn’s representatives. Walt Disney Studios president Alan Horn met several times with the controversial director and was apparently satisfied enough to give the okay to rehire him.
Gunn will still direct The Suicide Squad for DC and Warner Brothers with Marvel even agreeing to hold production of Guardians 3 until that project is complete. This will put the film probably out to 2021 at the earliest.
