Netflix’s Newest Sci-Fi Adventure Resurrects an Underrated Star

Jennifer Lopez is embracing her action-hero phase with full vigor. Following her standout performance in “Hustlers,” Lopez has been diving into roles designed to launch potential franchises, albeit with mixed outcomes. Despite the lukewarm reception of last year’s “The Mother,” envisioned as a female-fronted counterpart to action staples like “The Bourne Identity” or “Extraction,” Lopez’s efforts remain undeterred. Netflix, alongside Lopez, is set to make another bold stride into the action genre in 2024.

This time, Lopez ventures back into science fiction with “Atlas,” her first foray into the genre since the 2000 film “The Cell.”

In “Atlas,” which drops this Memorial Day, Lopez is under the direction of Brad Peyton, known for “San Andreas” and “Rampage.” She takes on the role of Atlas Shepherd, a data analyst in a futuristic city who finds herself hunting a rogue robot on a distant planet. Things quickly spiral, pushing her to adapt by using an AI-powered suit for survival. The movie’s trailer offers a glimpse into this high-stakes, interstellar chase.

Atlas” isn’t just a one-woman spectacle; it boasts a strong supporting cast including Sterling K. Brown (“Hotel Artemis“), Simu Liu (“Shang-Chi“), and Mark Strong (“Kingsman“). The film presents a fresh sci-fi challenge for each actor, promising an intriguing mix of artificial intelligence and space exploration themes.

Brad Peyton, stepping somewhat outside his usual domain but bringing his experience from working with Dwayne Johnson, directs “Atlas.” Given his track record with high-adrenaline films like “Rampage” and “San Andreas,” expectations for “Atlas” lean towards a blend of serious action with the potential for blockbuster entertainment.

While it might not kickstart a franchise, “Atlas” signals Netflix’s commitment to delivering engaging, if not always critically acclaimed, action-packed films. It’s an opportunity for Lopez to showcase her versatility in another action-packed role, adding to her diverse filmography.

Atlas hits Netflix on May 24.
