Dune Wraps

The highly anticipated remake of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi epic series Dune has wrapped production with a planned release in November 2020.

Directed by Denis Villeneuve and starring Oscar Isaac, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin and Jason Momoa, the plot is expected to follow the first half of Herbert’s massive novel which involves Duke Leto Atreides (Isaac) being sent by the Emperor to take over the desert planet Arrakis for control of the most valuable substance in the universe, “The Spice.” Spice is a drug that extends human life and expands consciousness. This starts an all-out war as others vie to control Arrakis (aka Dune) and the Emperor weaves his larger plan detailed in the rest of the books which hopefully will be continued in film.

The film’s cast includes:

  • Oscar Isaac as Duke Leto Atreides
  • Javier Bardem as Stilgar
  • Josh Brolin as Gurney Halleck
  • Jason Momoa as Duncan Idaho
  • Timothee Chalamet as Paul Atreides
  • Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica
  • Dave Bautista as Glossu Rabban
  • Stellan Skarsgard as Baron Vladimir Harkonnen
  • Charlotte Rampling as Gaius Helen Mohiam
  • Zendaya as Chani
  • David Dastmalchian as Piter De Vries
  • Chang Chen as Dr. Wellington Yeah

Villeneuve (Blade Runner 2049 and Prisoners) co-wrote the screenplay along with Eric Roth and Jon Spaihts. Dune was previously released in 1984 in a film directed by David Lynch and starring Kyle MacLachlan, Virginia Madsen, and Patrick Stewart.

Brian Herbert, son of Dune creator Frank Herbert, announced the completion of principal photography on his twitter account on July 25. Brian wrote 2 books with author Kevin J. Anderson to complete his father’s original Dune series. He is also serving as Executive Producer on the film.

Now that filming has wrapped, nearly 18-months of post-production will follow with a release set for November 20, 2020. The score is being written by composer Hans Zimmer and the extensive amount of visual effects are being done. If successful, the plan is for at least two additional films to cover the rest of the first book in the second movie. Villeneuve will also direct the pilot of Dune: The Sisterhood, a series for WarnerMedia’s upcoming streaming service HBO Max.
