HBO’s Lanterns Takes an Earth-Bound Approach to DC Classic

HBO’s upcoming Green Lantern series, titled Lanterns, is set to be a thrilling and unique addition to the DC Universe. Unlike previous portrayals, this series will feature a darker, grounded approach with a strong mystery element. The show will follow two of the most iconic Green Lanterns, Hal Jordan and John Stewart, as they are drawn into a gritty, Earth-based murder investigation. Described as a blend of superhero action with the atmospheric tone of a detective series like True Detective, Lanterns promises to delve into the deeper mythology of the Green Lantern Corps while staying focused on a complex mystery set in the American heartland.

What sets Lanterns apart is its balance between cosmic adventure and a more grounded, human storyline. Instead of focusing solely on space battles, this series brings the Green Lanterns back to Earth, where they act as intergalactic cops, investigating a murder that has far-reaching implications for both Earth and the wider universe. This approach not only adds a noir-like suspense to the superhero genre but also makes the story more relatable by dealing with crime and corruption closer to home.

Behind the scenes, the show boasts a powerhouse team of creators, including Chris Mundy (of Ozark and True Detective fame), Damon Lindelof (known for Watchmen), and Tom King, a celebrated comic book writer. Their combined expertise promises a series that is not just visually spectacular but also narratively rich and compelling. Lanterns will consist of eight episodes, and is slated to be a crucial part of the overarching DCU, tying into broader story arcs that James Gunn and Peter Safran are crafting for the future of DC films and TV.

This take on Green Lantern comes with great anticipation, especially after the 2011 film failed to resonate with audiences. However, with this more mature, nuanced approach, Lanterns is positioned to bring new depth to the Green Lantern lore while satisfying long-time fans of the franchise.

As HBO ventures into this new territory, Lanterns is shaping up to be a crucial stepping stone in the rejuvenation of the DC Universe on screen. No mention yet of when we might get to see this series, though we suspect late 2025 or 2026.
