Rey to get a new Jedi Order movie

Disney and Lucasfilm have announced a new Star Wars movie focusing on Rey (Daisy Ridley) rebuilding the Jedi Order 15 years after the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

Announced at the Star Wars Celebration 2023 in London, Lucasfilm has begun development on the film which is set to be directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. Rey is the only returning character confirmed thus far (though I suspect BB8 may be included). A Mandalorian movie directed by Dave Filoni and a film covering the origins of the Jedi from James Mangold were also announced.

Said to be a stand-alone rather than “Episode 10”, the new film — which may be the first part of a new trilogy — can be outside of the Luke/Leia/Vader lore and be it’s own entity. Of course since Rey did take the surname Skywalker at the end of Rise of Skywalker, her new adventures will have some connection to the previous films but with more freedom to go outside of the formula established in the previous films.

With the First Order destroyed and no one knowing just how many Jedi might still exist, this could be an exciting development for the galaxy far, far away. Could it break totally away from the Republic to something entirely different? What is the actual state of the galaxy with no Empire or Republic? Could it tie into the very popular Star Wars: Jedi video games (favorites of mine) and bring Cal Kestis to the big screen?

The film may be released as early as Christmas 2025 as the first draft of the script has already been completed by Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson (The Strain), with rewrites happening now by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight.
