DC announces exciting new movie and TV projects

In a major development in the world of DC Comics, filmmakers James Gunn and Peter Safran have announced a bold new plan for the future of DC movies and TV shows. The duo, who have a track record of success in the film and television industry, will bring their unique style and vision to the DC Comics world.

According to the plan, the new DC movies and TV shows will feature a diverse cast of characters, including both well-known heroes and lesser-known characters. The projects will also feature a mix of classic and modern storytelling elements, aimed at appealing to fans of all ages. There will be “cannon” produced projects but with room for projects that will fall outside the “official” timelines. Watch the full announcement below and read on to a full summary.

Four existing DCU projects are geared for a release this year:

  • Shazam! Fury of the Gods – the sequel to 2019’s Shazam! with a March 17, 2023 release
  • The Flash – the troubled production starring the more troubled Ezra Miller is going to somehow reset the DC continuity. It will be released June 16, 2023
  • Blue Beetle about a teenager coming into contact with an alien scarab to be released August 18, 2023
  • Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom – the sequel to 2018’s Aquaman to be released December 25, 2023

The new phase referred to as Chapter 1 is called “Gods and Monsters” and will be kicking off in 2025. A total of 10 movies and TV shows have been announced that will be interconnected in this new universe. The goal is for 2 movies and 2 HBO Max shoes released per year.

The Films are:

  • Superman: Legacy — Gunn is already writing the screenplay for a film that is tentatively scheduled for July 11, 2025 and may direct the film as well. As previously announced, Henry Cavill will not reprise the role of the Man of Steel as this film will focus on a younger Clark Kent and focuses on his struggled to be both superhero and a reporter for the Daily Planet.
  • The Authority — It will be based on Wildstorm characters and explores antiheroes who have good intentions, but not always the best methods.
  • The Brave and the Bold – A Batman and Robin story with a new star to take over the Dark Knight role. It is based on Grant Morrison’s Batman comic run with Bruce discovering his son Damian Wayne who was taught to be an assassin but becomes Robin.
  • Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow – Based on Tom King’s recent DC comics, he is also involved in the screenplay. The film will explore the life of Superman’s cousin.
  • Swamp Thing— A film that will explore the origin story of Swamp Thing but which is said to be outside of the official DC Timeline (which means he will probably not interact with other DC characters).

The TV Series are:

  • Creature Commandos— The only animated series being planned, Gunn has written 7 episodes for the series. It will be include Rick Flagg Sr, Nina Mazursky, Doctor Phosphorus, Eric Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, G.I. Robot, and Weasel.
  • Waller — Viola Davis will reprise the character of Amanda Waller from Suicide Squad set to be produced by Jeremy Carver (Doom Patrol) and Christal Henry (Watchmen). It is said to be set between the events of Peacemaker seasons 1 and 2.
  • Lanterns — Explores the Green Lanterns serving on Earth, Hal Jordan and John Stewart. It is going to be a detective mystery show which will lead into the reveal an ancient horror which will form the connective thread between movies and the other shows.
  • Paradise Lost — A Wonder Woman prequel series (without Gal Gadot) focusing on the origins of Themyscira before Diana Prince’s time. It will be a Games of Thrones style series focusing on political intrigue and how a society of women developed.
  • Booster Gold – It will focus on the future tech superhero with imposter syndrome and DC is currently speaking to an actor to play the title role.

Some things are still up in the air though including the future of Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, Jason Mamoa’s Aquaman, and formerly anticipated projects like Justice League. What has been announced thus far is only the first part of Chapter 1 though so we may see these projects filling out the second half of it or coming into Chapter 2.

James Gunn and Peter Safran are set to collaborate with a talented team of writers, artists, and other creatives to bring their vision to life. The new DC movies and TV shows will offer fans a rich and immersive experience, with interconnected storylines and a shared universe.
