The droid is said to play a big role in the final film of the trilogy – and perhaps will be his last.
Star Wars creator George Lucas always said the only continuing characters he had planned to be in all 3 of his trilogies were to be the droids R2-D2 and C-3PO. They have been in The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi and will appear in Star Wars 9, concluding the current trilogy. Anthony Daniels who has played the golden droid since A New Hope, has been pretty mum on his role in 9, but cast member Oscar Isaac, who plays Poe Dameron, has let it slip the droid has a bigger role in the finale.
Isaac appearing on The Tonight Show while promoting his latest movie, Netflix’s Triple Frontier, revealed his last day on the set was also Daniels’ last day:
It was such a milestone. And what’s particularly special is the day that I finished, these three massive movies, such a huge part of my life, it was like, ‘okay, Oscar’s done,’ so I said a few words. And then it was, ‘and it’s also Anthony Daniels’ last day on set!’ Way to take the thunder! He’s been there from the very beginning. Originally George Lucas saw the whole thing as a story about C-3PO and R2-D2; these two droids who witness all this history.

Isaac also hinted that he and C-3PO share a lot more screen time in this final installment of the trilogy indicating the droid plays a much more pivotal role in 9 then his brief appearances in the first 2 parts.
“He was super emotional about it, hanging up the golden cowl. And I think, and I mean it, he kept saying this was the most fun he’s had. He had so many fun things to do. We got to work a lot together and it was amazing to see that piece of history up close.”

With so little info released about Star Wars 9 – which is yet to have the official title announced even – any little bit of info is interesting. Star Wars Celebration in April should see some more official statements for the film set for a December 20th release.
