Quest 2 VR Headset to release October 13

Starting at just $299, with it bring VR more fans?

Facebook has announced the next generation of their Quest VR Headset – the Quest 2. With upgrades to resolution, frame rate, and controllers, this free-standing headset at a lower price just might allow for wider acceptance of Virtual Reality.

I have had a Quest since last May and greatly enjoy it (and have pre-ordered the Quest 2) – I stream VR play at Scifispace VR on Facebook. Being able to play without a PC (though more games are available when using the optional link cable with a PC) was a great step forward in VR making the Quest a portable device.

The Quest 2 in an upgrade, though some feel not a big enough upgrade. It is 10% lighter and slightly smaller than the original quest which some reviewers find slightly more comfortable. It also adds a Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 chipset giving the Quest 2 significantly more processing power for up to 90 hz refresh rate (though this will not be utilized immediately) and combined with 6GB Ram, gives the new headset a sharper display at 1832×1920 px pr eye.

The Oculus Touch controllers have also been redesigned and include hand tracking for games that do not require a controller. You can also still connect the Quest 2 to a PC for an extended library and greater resolution.

Facebook has also managed to lower the price on the Quest 2 – partially by making things like an improved head strap as an optional accessory. Available in 2 models one with 64 GB storage for $299.00 and the other with 256 GB storage for $399.00. Adding the Elite Strap adds $49 and an accessory pack with the Elite Strap, battery pack and carrying case $129.00.

The Quest 2 is available for pre-order now at Oculus.com, as well as Best Buy, Costco and other retailers.
