The SyFy channel has finally figured out it’s supposed to show science fiction!
The network, which in recent years has shown mostly B-movies, reality shows and wrestling, is trying to get back to it’s roots and bring more quality science fiction to our televisions again. Hopefully that doesn’t just mean more Twilight Zone marathons. They have finally realized that, though their Sharknado films have gotten a cult following, their programming choices have driven away their target audience of science fiction fans (raising my hand as one of them).
“We want to be the best science fiction channel that we possibly can,” said SyFy president Dave Howe. “And in some respects, that means going back to the more traditional sci-fi/fantasy that fans often say they feel we’ve exited. We’re going to occupy that space in a way we haven’t for the past few years.”
The success of their latest efforts, Defiance and Continuum have apparently been part of their wake up call with those 2 shows bringing back it’s core 18-40 year old male demographic.
No firm announcements yet of any new series (a Firefly mini-series would be nice!), but it makes me somewhat hopeful again that I might have to remember what number the station is on my cable box!
