Paul Shapiro has joined Syfy as SVP of Original Content. Based in Syfy’s Los Angeles office, Shapiro will development of all scripted content, including series and mini-series, reporting to Syfy’s president of original content Mark Stern. Shapiro replaces Andrew Plotkin, who left recently to head New Regency’s TV division. “Paul’s depth of experience, strong creative taste, and excellent talent relationships are going to be invaluable as we ramp up development on the most ambitious slate of programming in Syfy’s history,” Stern said.
Shapiro has 15 years of experience in program development. He most recently spent four years as EVP at David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman’s ABC Studio-based Mandeville Films where he developed comedy, drama and original movies for television. From 2004-06, he was EVP at Sandy Grushow’s 20th Century For TV-based Phase Two Prods. From 1997-2003, Shapiro worked at Big Ticket Television, rising through the ranks to SVP, Series Development. Shapiro’s resume also includes stints at 3 Arts, Columbia Pictures TV and Irv Schechter Co.
Not sure what science fiction projects he might have worked on. We can hope he has some grasp of the genre.
