New details are coming out about JJ Abrams upcoming Star Wars sagas now owned by Disney.
It has been confirmed that plans are to release 1 new Star Wars movie every year beginning in 2015, but latest word is that they will alternate between a saga film and a spin off based on a particular character – with loveable scoundrel Han Solo the first honoree. So confirmed so far:
2015: Star Wars, Episode VII – events take place following Revenge of the Jedi and will include cameos by Harrison Ford (Han Solo), Carrie Fisher (Leia), and Mark Hammil (Luke Skywalker).
2016: Star Wars, Han Solo – will be an adventure with a younger (recast) Han Solo and also include Boba Fett. It will revolve around Han and Chewbacca and might be the story of how they got the Millennium Falcon (which would mean an appearance by a younger Lando too since we know Han won the Falcon from him).
2017: Star Wars, Episode VIII
2018: Star Wars, Character film – no word yet on what characters would be featured in this one. My guess is that if the Han Solo movie does well, it will be another Han adventure (think the Wolverine movies).
2019: Star Wars, Episode IX – the conclusion to the saga George Lucas originally envisioned.
Disney is also preparing a new animated series, Star Wars: Rebels, to air on the Disney channel next year which will feature new and established characters.
Sounds to me they are emulating the Avengers idea of stand alone films (Thor, Captain America, Iron Man) along with the overall saga (Avengers movies). As long as the stories hold up, I could see this working – what do you think?
