Fox is actually now saying they want to bring Firefly back! This is probably the closest they have come to saying they screwed up canceling it after only 1 season in the first place, but it is good news. In the wake of their reboots of X-Files, 24, and Prison Break, they appear to be mining whatever shows they own the rights to for new life and ratings.
The rub is they will only bring it back if Joss Whedon is on board. Now on the surface, that is a good thing as rebooting it without it’s creator would surely be a bad idea. However, considering how much Fox put Whedon thru the first time out, I have to wonder how interested he would be in dealing with them again.
That was before Joss Whedon wrote and directed The Avengers – the 5th highest grossing movie of all time and helmed phase 1 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe which seriously upped his clout. Hopefully that success would clue Fox into the idea of stepping back and letting Joss do what he does so well, but you never can tell.
Joss Whedon and pretty much the entire original cast have said they would love to bring back Firefly and with Nathan Fillion now free from Castle, the timing is good for him at least. Of course Ron Glass who played Shepard Book passed away last year, but if they pick up after the events of the movie Serenity, the character of Book (and Wash) would be dead and not in the new series anyway.
Personally, I would love to see a series of mini-series events allowing Whedon time to develop some awesome story lines instead of the grind of a weekly series, especially since he is also still connected to Marvel Agents of SHIELD and his production partner, aka brother Jed, is tied up with that show. It would also allow the other cast members time between their current shows (Adam Baldwin on The Last Ship and Gina Torres on Suits) to appear.
What do you think? Would you like to see a new Firefly series?
