Another DC Comics superhero is coming to The WB – Black Lightning. Originally planned for Fox, The CW jumped on the chance to add another DC comic’s property to its line up when Fox passed on the series option.
Black Lightning is said to be a darker kind of superhero than Supergirl, The Flash or Legends of Tomorrow. It focuses on Jefferson Pierce, the principal of a Los Angeles high school, who hung up his Black Lightning mantel after he failed to protect an innocent high school student.
Naturally something is going to happen to draw the 40 year old retired superhero back into battle – a gangbanger getting his youngest daughter Jennifer in danger.
The series is going to take a look at gang violence and the ongoing issues between African-American communities and the police as well as giving us the usual super-heroics.
Cress Williams (Friday Night Lights and Veronica Mars) stars as Pierce with the series filming in Atlanta. No word yet on a debut date.
