I think it would have been a bigger surprise if ABC had dropped the show, but they have officially picked up Joss Whedon’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. for the 2013-2014 TV season. Details of the series is finally being released, including the fact it will star Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson (who actually died the Avengers movie). The first cast photo released is above.
Joss Whedon of course wrote and directed the massively successful Marvel’s The Avengers movie last year and directed and co-wrote the pilot episode. His co-writers, brother Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen, also collaborated on Dollhouse and Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog. Of course Joss was also the genius behind Firefly, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, though it took The Avengers to really get much deserved recognition.
ABC’s official release includes a description of the series:
Clark Gregg reprises his role of Agent Phil Coulson from Marvel’s feature films as he assembles a small, highly select group of Agents from the worldwide law-enforcement organization known as S.H.I.E.L.D. Together they investigate the new, the strange, and the unknown across the globe, protecting the ordinary from the extraordinary. Coulson’s team consists of Agent Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), highly trained in combat and espionage, Agent Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen) expert pilot and martial artist, Agent Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker); brilliant engineer and Agent Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) genius bio-chemist. Joining them on their journey into mystery is new recruit and computer hacker Skye (Chloe Bennet). From Executive Producers Joss Whedon (“Marvel’s The Avengers,” ”Buffy the Vampire Slayer”); Jed Whedon & Maurissa Tancharoen, “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” pilot co-writers (“Dollhouse,” “Dr.Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog”); Jeffrey Bell (“Angel,” “Alias”); and Jeph Loeb (“Smallville”) comes Marvel’s first TV series. “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” is produced by ABC Studios and Marvel Television.
Of course they got it wrong in that it is hardly “Marvel’s first TV series”. Over the years, many Marvel comics have spawned both live action and animated series including Spiderman and The Incredible Hulk.
I assume this series will take place before the events of the movie since Coulson is alive and in charge, though there is some speculation that his death may have been faked in the Avengers movie to bring the heroes together.
Watch for the debut of the first preview of the show during tonight’s Once Upon a Time season finale. Agents of SHIELD will air on Tuesday nights at 8 pm ET this fall (against ratings champ NCIS which may not be a good thing).
